comcast cares dayEach Spring, Comcast gathers its local employees for a day of service in the community.  Comcast partnered with Rebuilding Together of Thurston County and descended upon the home of Kristen, a deserving recipient of a long list of home repairs. In record time, the Comcast crew completed all the listed projects and opted to keep working, finding a few more needed repairs around her home.

The Comcast volunteers replaced a toilet, built a new fence and stairs, stabilized two decks, affixed siding to a shed, weeded the garden areas around the property, hung two gates, and painted. It was quite the monumental effort.

Holly Scott, Comcast’s Administrative Assistant for the local office (and unofficial den mother of the crew), attributed part of the speed and success of the project to Rebuilding Together who also helped to recruit volunteers for the work. “This year was the first year we went over our goal for volunteers. We were hoping to get 75 [people], and the final count was 93. Rebuilding Together provided quite a few people,” Scott said.

Rebuilding Together President Jackie Ashley was also very impressed and happy with the effort. “I have never seen so many wonderful, hard working families doing such great work as volunteers,” Ashley noted.  Indeed there were many families and young children participating on the job site. What’s more there were many smiles, laughs, and happy people. Everyone reported a similar feeling of joy from helping someone in need.

Jason a new member of the Comcast sales team and first time Cares Day participant said that he has worked for other major companies prior and that Comcast “does more for the community than any of the others.”

“I will do anything I can to support what they’re [Comcast] supporting,” said John, a Comcast Cares Day volunteer for eight years.  He likes working for a company that has community values and that takes so much time to help others.

The spirit of community and values permeated the entire job. Not only was it a fun family effort with a lot of love going around, but the job was also environmentally friendly. A complete recycling set up was there.  Scrap materials were put to use or saved for other jobs. The Comcast site used materials donated from Thurston County companies.

Kristen, the homeowner, watched the work with emotion.  She was overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit. Holly noted that Kristen was more talkative last Saturday then she had been in all their previous meetings.

“It’s the confidence and self-esteem that this is bringing her,” said Holly. “She felt she was all alone.”

It is the team effort and “get involved” spirit that turn this from a simple donation into a real substantial help to the homeowner. In the words of a very emotional and grateful Kristen, “Comcast has opened the door for me and pulled me out. I will never feel alone again.”
