Education Scholarships Improving the Lives of Women and Girls in Thurston County

Soroptimist International of Olympia (est. 1941) is pleased to announce the recipients of its four annual local scholarships:

The Soroptimist International Scholarship in Vocational Technical Education is $3,000 for the qualified award winner to study at the South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC).  This year’s recipient is Huda Abbasi studying Computer Network Administration.

The Women’s Opportunity Award is $1,850 to support a female, who is the primary ‘breadwinner’ for her family, enrolling or returning to secondary education.  This year’s recipient is Pam Turpin, a student at SPSCC studying Office Administration.

The Soroptimist Endowment Scholarship is $1,000 for the qualified award winner to study at Evergreen State College.  This year’s recipient is Erica Engle studying in the Cultural Crossings program.

The Violet Richardson Award is $250, and recognizes a high school student who is a dedicated volunteer in our community.  This year’s recipient is Rachel Burkhart for her work with Thurston County Animal Services.

Various other scholarships totaling $2,300 will be awarded to women locally and internationally to assist in improving their lives.  In total, Soroptimist International of Olympia will provide over $8,000 in scholarship awards this year.

This year’s local award winners will be honored the fourth week in March during a club dinner at Mercato Ristorante in Olympia, WA.
