(OLYMPIA, Wash.) – The YWCA of Olympia will hold its annual benefit luncheon “Spring Into Action: Paths to the Future” next month to celebrate its programs for girls (Girls Without Limits! and Girls Circle).  Participants from each program will be in attendance at and will be part of the luncheon activities.

This year’s featured speaker is Judge Paula Casey.  Casey is a retired Superior Court judge who was a founder of the Thurston County Dispute Resolution Center.  Casey earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and political science from Willamette University in 1969 and she graduated from Willamette University College of Law in 1972 as the only woman in her class.  Casey was elected as a Superior Court Judge in 1984.  While on the bench, Casey was not only instrumental in developing Thurston County’s Family & Juvenile Court but also won numerous awards including the YWCA’s Women of Achievement Award for Leadership (1999) and Community Youth Services’ 2002 Youth Advocate of the Year Award

The “Spring Into Action: Paths To The Future” Benefit Luncheon will take place on Tuesday, April 23rd from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Indian Summer Golf & Country Club (5900 Troon Ln SE Olympia, WA 98501).  Lucky Eagle Casino & Hotel will once again serve as a sustaining sponsor.  Tickets are on sale and can be purchased by contacting the YWCA of Olympia at (360) 352-0593 or by going online at www.ywcaofolympia.org, under the Special  Events page. Tickets are $35 and tables of eight are available for $280.  Event organizers expect the event to sell out.

The YWCA of Olympia has two girls programs.  Girls Circle is a free after-school program that meets weekly at 14 schools in Thurston County. A trained facilitator leads topics at each school that focus on finding female role models, self-care, positive body image, self-esteem building, reducing stress and cultivating productive relationships. The YWCA of Olympia’s Girls Without Limits! (GWOL!) program is a spring and summer break and occasional weekend camp program for girls ages 10 to 14. GWOL! focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as leadership, self-esteem, career awareness, and art.  GWOL! participants are given the opportunity to meet professional women, go on educational field-trips, and work on group projects. Girls are encouraged to empower themselves and each other by increasing self-confidence, knowledge, and skills in the STEM area.

“Spring Into Action: Paths to the Future” coincides with the theme of March’s National Women’s History Month which is “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics”.
