On March 5, 2013, CrossFit Luminis launched its CrossFit Kids program as part of it quest to bring a strength and conditioning program designed to help kids develop a lifelong love of fitness. Push-ups in other sports may be considered a punishment or a penalty, but in the world of CrossFit Kids, they are performed for fun within a competitive yet supportive environment. CrossFit Kids workouts consist of constantly-varied, functional movements that deliver fitness that is broad, inclusive and general and scaleable for any participant at any level. What this means in kids’ speak is that because no two workouts are ever quite the same, there is no room for boredom and kids remain engaged, excited and committed.

“Kids are not yet plagued by as many bad habits as their adult counterparts, so they’re like sponges and quite adept at being fast learners,” says James Lozano Byerly, owner / trainer at CrossFit Luminis. Coach Lozano-Byerly is father to ten-year-old Seth who has been CrossFitting for a little over two years now. “Like a lot of kids, Seth participates in other team sports throughout the year such as football and soccer, but CrossFit really helps him maximize his endurance, agility and perseverance. Most importantly, it has taught him about community and how you never stop cheering until the last athlete has completed his/her WOD [Work Out of the Day].”

So what is a CrossFit Kids’ WOD? The functional movements involve exercises that are fundamental to all things that kids need to do when they play – pull, push, run, throw, climb, lift and jump. All of the movements are taught safely and effectively under the supervision of thoroughly trained CrossFit trainers.Work outs will increase physical competence in ten key areas: cardiovascular and respiratory, endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. Similar to CrossFit for adults, all workouts can be modified to the individual child so that each participant is challenged enough to deliver measurable results and personal athletic progress.

Coach Lozano-Byerly opened CrossFit Luminis in December 2011 in his own personal quest to share with others the life-changing effects that CrossFit had on him. “CrossFit is about mastering performance for everyday life and gaining self worth. It’s the physical and mental challenge that makes it so worthwhile,” he says. Lozano-Byerly wanted to make a difference, not only for himself but for others as well. What began as a garage group of 3 workout partners quickly grew into an almost 100 member gym in under 9 months. The CrossFit Luminis membership is all inclusive and boasts a community comprised of housewives and grandparents to athletes in training for competitions. It only made sense to take the passion to the next level and offer an organized program dedicated to inspiring a love of fitness for kids.

Since late 2004, CrossFit Kids has been Forging the Future of Fitness and is currently in over 400 gyms in North America, Australia, Europe, Africa, India, Japan and Panama.
