Earlier this week, we shared a story about Sara and Nate Reilly, owners of downtown Olympia restaurant, Darby’s Cafe.  The article talked about how Darby’s Cafe was “discovered” by celebrity chef, Guy Fieri.  But, what captured Olympia readers was not the familiarity with a TV icon, but rather the notion that small business owners in our own backyard are doing cool things that are worthy of greater exposure.  (To read more comments about Darby’s Cafe, visit our ThurstonTalk Facebook page and scroll to posts on February 27.)

The popularity of this article prompts the selections for this week’s favorite features – focused on recent profiles of individuals in our community, doing great things.  Know someone that we should profile?  Send a note to submit@thurstontalk.com.

Alexander Mac Donald – Bike and Bike

Operating for over a decade, Bike and Bike donates bicycles to low income and homeless citizens.  The bike mechanics also repair bicycles and sell used bikes at low prices.  Their parts warehouse is stocked and the organization is staffed with volunteers.

John McGimpsey – North Thurston Public Schools

At 96 years old, John is the oldest active member of his gym.  While that’s a worthy accomplishment in its own right, the message of this article is that one person can make a difference.  John donated funds to North Thurston Public Schools to establish the McGimpsey Pantries, a safe and consistent place for teens to receive such necessities such as food, toiletries, and school supplies.

Dr. Devin Sawyer – Providence Medical Group

Providence’s Dr. Devin Sawyer has returned to Haiti seven times.  He returns to the same place each time to make a real, sustainable change.  In one visit, Dr. Sawyer will treat over 1,200 patients.  The generosity of providing health care in an impoverished corner of the world is outstanding.
