On Saturday, March 2, middle-school-aged girls in the south Puget Sound region will have the opportunity to take part in the Expanding Your Horizons conference. Since 1975, more than 800,000 girls nationwide have been exposed to math, science and technology through the conference.

The conference, for girls in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades, aim to show female students that careers in math, science and other technologies are not only possible, but viable and realistic. Not only does the conference aim to increase awareness in those fields, but also provides an opportunity for those girls to meet women working in those fields, thus providing real-life role models in the process.

The program goes beyond just math and science however. Representatives leading student workshops at the conference range from bankers and geologists, to highway engineers and college professors, to welders and computer technicians, and that’s just to name a few.

The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Gymnasium at South Puget Sound Community College, which is playing host to the event, and ends at 1:40 p.m. The conference is just $12 for students, and includes all materials, giveaways, and snacks. A special parent workshop is also offered for $12. Scholarships are available.

Students can register online at www.starjumper.net, or via mail. If registering via mail, include a registration form and a check to Expanding Your Horizons, P.O. Box 4254, Tumwater, Wash., 98501. The conference and workshops fill on a first-come, first-served basis and the deadline to register is Feb. 24. For additional information, contact Katya Miltimore at (360) 596-5229.
