Thrifty Thurston, our weekly article series, is a tribute to Olympia families.

Our Thrifty Thurston writers are parents with school-aged children.  We produce a weekly article highlighting inexpensive family fun around Thurston County.  A Thrifty Thurston story is published each Thursday morning.  We aim to capture events and activities that are unique to our community.  One week we may write about a community event such as Sand in the City and another week we will chat about bike riding on the Chehalis Western Trail.  Or we will even take a typical parent “problem” and provide a solution like in our post about birthday party locations.  Whatever the topic, our writers are passionate about living in Olympia and love to share the good things with you.

The playground at Percival Landing is a great place to burn off some extra energy.

Here are a few of our favorites from the past six months.  Watch for a fresh story next week.

Thrifty Thurston – Places To Play Outside In Olympia

Even though it’s January, there are some gorgeous days where we can sneak in some outside playtime between rain showers.  Turn to this article for a great list of local parks and open spaces.

Thrifty Thurston Visits The New East Bay Public Plaza – Free Family Fun In Downtown Olympia

One of our favorite events in 2012 was the opening of the new East Bay Public Plaza.  The green space is directly adjacent to two family friendly destinations – the New Hands On Children’s Museum and LOTT’s WET Science Center.

When the weather warms up, take your kids (toddlers welcome) to the East Bay Public Plaza.  Let them dip their toes in the stream.  Look for all the statues hidden throughout the space.  Read the signs about the importance of conserving water.  Enjoy the public park.

McLane Creek Nature Trail includes a 1.1 mile trail through scenic Capitol State Forest.

Thrifty Thurston – McLane Creek Nature Trail

Tucked away in West Olympia, the McLane Creek Nature Trail is one of our favorite wildlife viewing areas.  The boardwalk is suitable for even the newest walkers and the scenery keeps kids on alert to spot beavers, ducks, frogs, and turtles.

Thrifty Thurston – Timberland Regional Library Offers Free Family Fun For Families

When poor weather does drive you indoors, check out the family programs at your local Timberland Regional Library branch.  Our event calendar is full of free concerts, story telling, and various performances happening at the library.
