During a season focused primarily on outward displays of affection through gift giving, ThurstonTalk wanted to take a few minutes to shift attention back to the many non-profit organizations operating in our community.  Creating a positive impact in Olympia and throughout Thurston County, these non-profit organizations, most run solely by volunteers, are gearing up to provide vital support to our neighbors who need it the most.

While not discounting the charitable organizations that have more public presence, we picked a few local groups that may be receiving less attention.  Check them out and consider checking someone off your list by making a charitable donation.  Keep a watch on ThurstonTalk.com where we profile at least one local non-profit organization each month.

Bronwyn’s Wheelhouse Remodeling Homes For Children With Disabilities

Started by Colleen MacDonald, a mother stricken with grief over the loss of her daughter Bronwyn, this charitable organization is remodeling homes for Thurston County families.  Tackling only one project at a time, the team includes Brandon Chartrey of Yesterday’s Homebuilders who coordinates contractors and professional crafts people to donate materials and labor.  Once all supplies and time are organized, the group starts on a project to make a lasting impact to a local family.

Concern For Animals Speaks Up For Those That Can’t

An organization devoted to championing livable conditions for pets, Concern for Animals is playing a vital role for families too.  Besides reducing the cost of adoption and providing funds to offset the cost of spay and neutering services, the non-profit organization also provides a food bank for families that cannot afford food for their pet.

HeartStrides Therapeutic Riding Providing Smiles Across Thurston County

The two-year old program provides therapy and recreational horseback riding for adults and children with cognitive and physical disabilities.  Over the past two years, the program has seen increased participation and tremendous changes watching riders during each session.
