Anyone thinking, or even just dreaming, of travel to Europe has an opportunity to learn about European art and history from Gene Openshaw, one of travel guru Rick Steves’ travel partners and guide book co-authors. Openshaw will be at the Tumwater Timberland Library on Saturday, December 1 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The class is free of charge, as are all Timberland Regional Library programs. The speaker is paid for by the Friends of the Tumwater Timberland Library.

An author, composer, tour guide, and lecturer on art and history, Openshaw will share an understanding of Medieval feudalism, Renaissance art, Gothic architecture, ancient Greek life, and much more. The audience will learn how and why things were done, from castle construction to elegant court life to the rise of Venice to the fall of Rembrandt.

“After years of travel in Europe, we’ve distilled what you need to know in order to fully appreciate the sights and culture. And just as important, we know what you don’t need to know, so you won’t walk away from the class feeling like you just ate an encyclopedia,” states the class description.

Openshaw has traveled through Europe for many years and specializes in writing walking tours of Europe’s cultural sights. He and has written or co-authored eight Rick Steves European travel books including “Mona Winks: Self-Guided Tours of Europe’s Top Museums” and “Europe 101: History and Art for the Traveler,” both written to make Europe’s cultural sights fun and easy to understand. An interesting side note: as a composer, Openshaw has written a full-length opera (“Matter”), a violin sonata, and dozens of songs.

The Tumwater Timberland Library is located at 7023 New Market Street. For more information, call the library at (360) 943-7790 or visit www.TRL.org.
