OLYMPIA, Wash. – Puget Sound Energy’s Rock the BulbTM: The Re-Energize Tour 2012 is returning to Thurston County to give even more of the energy company’s residential electric customers the chance to save energy and hundreds of dollars on their electric bill with free light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. Rock the Bulb will be held at the Lacey Fred Meyer at 700 Sleater Kinney Rd. SE, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New to Rock the Bulb, customers can receive LED bulbs in addition to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Customers who attend Rock the Bulb can exchange up to 15 of their old inefficient incandescent bulbs for the same number of free ENERGY STAR®-qualified energy-saving bulbs, choosing from a variety of compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs and up to five LED bulbs.
“This is the first time we have ever offered our customers LED bulbs at a Rock the Bulb event and we are thrilled to be able to provide them with the opportunity to try LED lighting in their homes,” said Casey Cochrane, PSE’s local government and community relations manager.
LED bulbs use up to 80 percent less energy while producing the same quality and brightness of light that customers are used to getting from incandescent bulbs. ENERGY STAR-qualified LED bulbs have a lifespan of up to 25 years and ENERGY STAR-qualified CFL bulbs can last up to 10 years and use up to 78 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. The average incandescent bulb can last up to 1,000 hours or one year. While an LED bulb isn’t significantly more efficient than a CFL bulb, its long life makes it more cost effective. LED bulbs are also dimmable, making them a great solution for kitchen and dining room lights.
In advance of Rock the Bulb, PSE’s Rock the Bulb Street Team will be visiting a variety of local community events, festivals and public locations, engaging customers with free CFL bulbs and Rock the Bulb Backstage Passes. Customers who bring the Backstage Pass they received in their PSE bill or the Backstage Pass postcard they received in the mail — along with their PSE account number — will receive two bonus CFL bulbs, for a total of 17 free bulbs.
At Rock the Bulb exchange events, customers can participate in energy efficient games and activities, learn more about PSE’s programs to help save energy and money, and learn how to stay safe around electricity and natural gas at home. Customers who visit all three activity stations and take a pledge to be more energy efficient at home will receive a free WaterSense®-labeled premium-efficiency showerhead. Local radio stations will also broadcast live from the Rock the Bulb exchange event to encourage customers to participate, be more energy efficient, and give customers a chance to win prizes.
At Rock the Bulb’s most recent stop in Thurston County this year, nearly 700 Yelm customers exchanged their old incandescent bulbs for nearly 11,000 CFL bulbs, saving a total of $44,000 per year in energy costs. Rock the Bulb will host a second exchange event offering free LED and CFL bulbs in exchange for incandescent bulbs the weekend of Oct. 27-28 in Bellevue, Wash. (location to be announced).
