Mark your calendar for Arts Walk XLV! On Friday, October 5, from 5-10pm, and Saturday, October 6 from noon-5pm, downtown businesses will open their doors to showcase the wonderfully rich and diverse resource of visual and performing arts of the South Sound Region.  Enjoy two days of drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography, fibers and other visual art. Take in diverse performing arts, from family theater to a variety of musical styles and dance from fiddle to Flamenco!  Check out the Latte Art Throwdown!  Witness aerialist performance and experimental film!  Whatever art form moves you, chances are you’ll find it downtown during Arts Walk.  Arts Walk maps are available at participating locations, The Olympia Center, 222 Columbia St. NW and Olympia City Hall, 601 4th Ave E, after September 22. An online listing can be found at www.olympiawa.gov/artswalkmobile (also after September 22).

For youth and families, the City of Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation Department will sponsor a hands-on activity area with the Hands on Children’s Museum.  Stop by Friday, October 5, at Washington Street and 5th Avenue between 5-9pm to get your face painted and create art!

The Arts Walk map cover this fall is by David Joel.  David is an Olympia-born artist who is well known for his mural inside Darby’s restaurant on 5th Avenue.  He notes “My style has transformed, from intricate, graphic detail to much more textural works that include rich, colorful backgrounds and new explorations in text, figure, landscape and abstract map-making.”  Joel’s cover image “The Lady of Guffy Lane” was inspired by the Gibson-Girl models of the late 19th and early 20th century, especially in relationship to old Olympia Brewery advertisements.   On the cover, the period hairstyle becomes an abstract swirl of color and line in a richly patterned composition. See more of David’s work at: www.oneeyeopens.com.

Arts Walk is sponsored by the City of Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation Department and the Olympia Arts Commission, with support provided by Art House Designs, Capitol City Press, Heritage Bank and Mixx 96 FM, along with participating artists and businesses.  For more information, please contact Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation, at 360.753.8380  or olympiaparks@ci.olympia.wa.us
