The United Churches of Olympia is excited to welcome the Reverend Elsa A. Peters as its next pastor. Reverend Peters begins her duties in mid-September. Her first sermon as The United Churches of Olympia’s new pastor will be Sunday, September 23.

Reverend Peters comes to The United Churches of Olympia (TUCO) following the retirement of the Reverend Mark F. Dowdy in 2010 after 23 years as TUCO’s pastor and two years of service by the Reverend Tammy Stampfli as the church’s interim pastor while the national search was conducted.

“Elsa feels called to ministry with us in Olympia and has found a home where she can put down roots. She believes ministry is all about relationships and is very interested in forming meaningful ties with those in our congregation and our community,” says Cynthia Cook, moderator of the Church Council. “Elsa is particularly interested in our witness to social justice, both locally and internationally. She is passionate about our focus in the areas of homelessness and LGBT issues.”

“Elsa is enthusiastic, mature, intelligent, a strong preacher, and an innovative leader. She brings with her a passionate spirit and a fabulous sense of humor,” says Mike Segawa, chair of Personnel for The United Churches of Olympia.

The Reverend Elsa Peters was born not far from New York City. She attended Union Theological Seminary in New York City. During her studies, she served as a Chapel Minister at the seminary and a Minister of Children and Families in two different churches. In 2006, Elsa was called to the First Congregational Church in South Portland to serve as the Associate Pastor.

Reverend Peters is also a writer. She actively writes liturgy and articles on faith issues and maintains a personal blog.

The United Churches of Olympia is located at 110 11th Ave SE. It is a federated church with a Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination and a United Church of Christ (UCC) denomination worshiping as one church.
