Another successful Sand in the City has come and gone, with this year’s popular event taking place for the first time at the location of the new soon-to-be-open Hands On Children’s Museum. And this year, as in so many years past, Hartley Jewelers was proud to be a part of it.

Every year, Hartley Jewelers donates an item to be auctioned off during Sand in the City’s Sandblast Gala. All proceeds from the event and silent auction directly support the museum’s Free & Reduced Admissions programs, which allows 75,000 Puget Sound children and their families access to quality, hands-on learning and fun regardless of ability to pay.

Joyce Ray, a Hartley designer and jeweler for 20 years, spearheads the annual Sand in the City donation.

“It has always been important for Hartley Jewelers to give back to the community. We happily donate each year to help raise funds and help ensure that all the kids can benefit from the museum,” she says.

“I have grandchildren who are involved in the event and participate in the museum,” she continues, “and it feels good to know that we help give other kids that same opportunity.”

“It’s amusement and interaction,” Joyce says of all the museum offers its young guests. “They’re learning, but it’s effortless. It’s fun.”

“I have always tried to coordinate our donation with the sand theme,” Joyce says of the store’s Sandblast Gala donation. “It’s typically been charm bracelets with charms related to building sand castles or a Tahitian pearl.”

This year’s item was a silver charm bracelet with a Tahitian pearl in the center, a 14 karat gold and sterling sand bucket with shovel, a sand castle, and drink with a fun umbrella, and a diminutive flip flop.”

There’s no doubt that donations such as those made by Hartley Jewelers help the Hands On Children’s Museum work toward its mission to stimulate curiosity, creativity and learning through fun, interactive exhibits and programs.

Genevieve Chan, interim communications manager, appreciates Hartley Jewelers’ continued involvement.

“Each year, Hartley Jewelers has given us a really great donation of a valuable piece of jewelry, a bracelet or a freshwater pearl necklace,” says Chan.

And Chan says Hartley’s donations are always successful auction items, garnering their value and often exceeding it.

“There’s such great community support for the mission of the museum,” says Chan. “It’s so wonderful that people and businesses like Hartley Jewelers are willing to give their own time and treasure and talent to help the museum raise funds for its education programs.”

Like Joyce and Hartley Jewelers, many of the silent auction donors have a personal connection to the museum, having visited when they were young or bringing their own families there over the years.

“They want to give back to the museum and help support these important programs in the educational development of our children,” says Chan.

Hartley Jewelers is also proud to support a variety of local organizations and events, from Children’s Hospital and the St. Peter Hospital Christmas Forest, to SafePlace, Evergreen Christian School, Capital High School, the Miss Washington Foundation and more.
