Competition knows no age limits, and there was no greater evidence for that statement than at the Washington State Senior Games today, hosted by the Puget Sound Senior Games.

The diverse and wide array of athletic competitions were held at various locations around Thurston County, with the track and field events taking place at the stadium on the campus of Tumwater High School.

Athletes 50 and over from across the state were in attendance, and medals were on the line within each specific event and age category.

Paul Kelly, the field supervisor for the events at Tumwater High is impressed with the level of competition and spirit displayed by the athletes.

“Honestly, each year I feel like there are more competitive athletes, and those who train significantly throughout the year,” Kelly said. “That leads to closer contests and just an overall higher quality competition.”

Beth Daniel, an Olympia area woman competing in a variety of events, took home first place in the 800 meters for her age group on Saturday, and enjoys the fact that she can compete in an official setting.

“This is such a great event, and it gives people an opportunity to come out and compete and have fun,” Daniel said.  “Winning a medal feels great too.”
