South Puget Sound Community College student Matthew Shrader will be honored Sunday by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s Washington Chapter at a ceremony in Seattle.

Shrader, the South Puget Sound Senator for Legislative Affairs, is being honored with the GLSEN Washington Community Leader of the Year award for his work. The 7th Annual Gay-Straight Alliance Awards & Reception will be at Pier 66 in Seattle at 5 p.m.

Shrader, also the co-chair of Capital City Pride, the annual Olympia gay pride festival, is being honored for his work with Pride, as well as his work with MPowerment, a gay young men’s advocacy, support and health group. Shrader also helped establish the LGBTQ and Ally Scholarship at South Puget Sound.

According to the GLSEN Washington website, the award “goes to an individual who truly exemplifies the true spirit of tolerance. This person shows that service to community is not just being out there, but trying to make a difference in what they do. These individuals take time out of their busy schedules to help young people.”

Dante Obcena of South Seattle Community College will also be honored.
