What: Community discussion about possible locations for a new Boys and Girls Club at Woodruff Park on Olympia’s westside
When: Thursday, March 15 – 6:30pm
Where: Garfield Elementary School Gymnasium, 325 Plymouth Street NW, Olympia
Background Information:
Recently the Boys and Girls Club of Thurston County submitted a General Land Use Application to the City requesting conditional use approval to build a 19,850 sq. ft. building on an Olympia School District ball field at Madison and Thomas Streets next to Garfield Elementary School. The proposed Clubhouse would include an education and technology center, games room, teen center, art studio, small group meeting spaces, classrooms and a full size gymnasium, in addition to a kitchen for the preparation of meals and snacks.
Neighbors and others have expressed concern about the possible loss of the play field and have urged the Boys and Girls Club to consider other sites.
Since then, the Boys and Girls Club has asked the City about other possible locations at Woodruff Park near Garfield Elementary. Before making a decision about City park property, the Olympia City Council asked City Manager Steve Hall to schedule a community forum. The purpose of the forum is to give interested community members an opportunity to learn about the possible sites at Woodruff Park for a Clubhouse and to share their comments and ideas. In addition to the City Manager and other City staff, representatives of the Boys and Girls Club of Thurston County, the Olympia School District, and the City of Olympia Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee may be at the March 15 meeting.
