This is a great SUP paddle (Paddleboard) destination in Thurston County with a variety of options to choose from. Depending on tides and weather conditions a paddler could spend hours exploring this area.

 To get there:

  • Drive to the Luhr Beach launch ramp (4949 D’Milluhr Dr. NE, Olympia) to put in.
  • Parking is available but be sure to check for permit requirements.
  • Choose a high to slack tide for launching.
  • Once launched head right into the Nisqually Refuge.

Once in the Refuge you will see a variety of bird life and occasional wildlife. The view of Mount Rainier is beautiful. Take advantage of the high tide pushing you in and plan to turnaround when the tide switches.

If you launch with plenty of time left on the high tide you can choose to paddle up McCallister Creek under I-5 and beyond. Even with the I-5 noise this paddle is very serene and scenic.

We rate the Nisqually Refuge as one of the best stand up paddle destinations in the Olympia area.
