Loved Clothes Last! @ Browsers Books
Apr 18 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

In a world of fast, disposable fashion we want to switch the script; It’s time for a Fashion Revolution! Let’s start wearing and loving what we have, buying less, buying better and making it last. Hopefully, we all still have cherished items in our closets that have lasted the test of time. Perhaps a leather jacket handed down by your grandfather, a necklace worn at the wedding of your great aunt, a cool bag you bought on your travels that is falling apart, but you keep mending it because it’s your favorite. Maybe you still wear your old ex-boyfriend’s big tshirt or your best friend gave you a sweater she knitted. Maybe you have a lucky tie you wore to an interview that got you your dream job. Whatever the cherished item is, we want you to bring it to Browsers and share your love story! Local designer and mender, Shari Trnka, will be with us too! You may have met her at the Oly Farmers Market where she has a booth of her designs and upcycled clothing. She has many stories from her time in the fashion industry. So, garb that special item and bring it to Browsers – We cant wait to celebrate it with you!

Arbor Day Celebration 2024

The Olympia Garden Club invites the public to attend our 47th Arbor Day Celebration, at 11 AM on April 18, at Rose Garden Pavilion in the Memorial Garden in Squaxin Park (formerly Priest Point Park), 2600 East Bay Drive NE, Olympia.

The Celebration will include planting a tree in cooperation with Olympia Parks and Recreation, a tradition started in 1977.  We will also honor and celebrate the lives of individuals or groups as their names are added to our Memorial Garden Kiosks.  The Olympia Garden Club provides the service of adding names to the kiosk annually.  We invite the public to honor any member/group of our community (living or deceased) who provides (or has provided) a great service to our area.  Persons so honored do not have to be members of the Olympia Garden Club.

For more information about the Arbor Day Celebration and how to add a name go to olympiagardenclub.org/ and click on Memorial Garden under Service Projects at the bottom of the page.  Cost is $20/line.

Celebrate Burfoot Park’s 50th with an Earth Day Work Party! @ Burfoot Park
Apr 21 @ 9:45 am – 1:00 pm
Celebrate Burfoot Park's 50th with an Earth Day Work Party! @ Burfoot Park

Looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day? Join us in giving Burfoot Park some love on April 21! Just a couple hours and a party afterward – how easy is that?!

Help us pull some of that nasty, invasive, suffocating ivy and save some trees! If pulling ivy isn’t your thing, you can weed the Butterfly or Memorial Garden, or plant native plants.

We’ll also be celebrating the park’s 50th birthday! We LOVE this park and are so grateful county planners and park advocates had the foresight to establish it and all the other parks that give us safe places to enjoy nature and preserve trees and native habitat.

Hope to see you there!

Earth Day Downtown Oly Cigarette Butt Cleanup @ Olympia City Hall steps
Apr 22 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Join Olympia Surfrider for their monthly downtown Olympia cigarette butt focused cleanup. Cigarette butts are the top item found on beach cleanups around the world. Cigarette filters are made of plastic so these butts are very toxic in the environment for water and animals who mistake them for food. All the storm drains in downtown Oly lead to the bay, so the OlySurfrider chapter focuses on getting as many butts from entering Puget Sound as they can. The more volunteers, the more butts stopped from polluting! The chapter provides buckets, pickers, counters and gloves. However, bringing your own bucket and reusable gloves is very much appreciated! Please register for the event and sign the waiver. Bring your frineds and family too – this short one hour cleanup is strangely fun! We meet on the steps of City Hall to check in and then volunteers pick up butts for an hour and return to the steps at 6:30pm for a count and weight and fun raffle prizes.

United Way of Thurston County Hosts Annual Shelter Shower Drive & Drop Event @ United Way of Thurston County
Apr 24 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

United Way of Thurston County is thrilled to announce the return of its highly anticipated annual Shelter Shower on April 24, 2024, from 12 pm to 4 pm. The event will take place at the United Way of Thurston County headquarters, 3525 7th Ave SW, Suite 201, in Olympia.

The Shelter Shower is a vital initiative to gather essential shelter items for the Family Support Center of South Sound and SafePlace. Items such as diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and more are desperately needed to support individuals and families facing homelessness in our community.

The success of the Shelter Shower relies on the generous support of individuals, families, and businesses. There are several ways to get involved:

Donate: Consider donating essential shelter items to an individual or family. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference. You’ll find a wish list on our website.

Volunteer: Join us at the event as a volunteer and help collect, organize, and distribute donations.

Engage Your Workplace: Encourage your workplace team to participate in this worthy cause. We provide event kits complete with detailed instructions, timeline suggestions, posters for print, and social media posts to make it easy for your organization to get involved.

To learn more about the Shelter Shower Drive & Drop Event and how you can make a difference, please visit United Way of Thurston County’s website.
