Sibyl James discusses West African memoir

Sibyl James, a writer, traveler and Fulbright Scholar, will be at the Olympia Timberland Library on Thursday, February 9 from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. to read from and discuss her new book “The Last Woro Woro to Treichville: A West African Memoir.” Books will be available for purchase. The program takes place after the library closes.

The memoir is based on Ms. James’s experiences teaching and traveling as a Fulbright professor in Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in 1999 and 2000. The memoir includes in part her observations on daily life and culture, the coup and civil unrest that set the scene for the country’s recent civil wars and the four African girls who “adopted” her.

A believer in the value of immersing oneself in another culture, James has taught in the U.S., China, Mexico and, as Fulbright professor, in Tunisia and Cote d’Ivoire. Her publications include nine books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, including In China with Harpo and Karl, The Adventures of Stout Mama and China Beats (Egress Studio Press). James lives in Seattle.

The Olympia Timberland Library is at 313 8th Avenue. For more information, call the library at (360) 352-0595 or go to www.TRL.org.
