South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) today announced that Phuoc Truong, an international student focusing on computer science, will represent SPSCC on the 2019 All-Washington Academic Team. Truong along with top students from each of the state’s 34 community and technical colleges will be recognized and awarded a scholarship at the All-Washington Academic Team ceremony on Thursday, March 21, 2019.
In its 23rd year, this year’s ceremony will feature a keynote message from Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee, with further remarks from Phi Theta Kappa president and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. The ceremony will be held in the Student Union Building on SPSCC’s Olympia Campus.
SPSCC’s selected student, Phuoc Truong, grew up with the tireless support and sacrifice of his parents in Vietnam. They opted to endure poverty to ensure their children had the opportunity to change their futures through education. Now an international student at SPSCC with a 4.0 GPA, Truong tutors his friends and family in mathematics on his own time, while also exploring a deep interest in technology. After graduating from SPSCC, Truong plans to transfer to a 4-year university to complete his degree in Computer and Information Sciences. In the future, he hopes to specialize in using machine learning and artificial intelligence to create a better future.
Scholarship Sponsors
Each All-Washington Academic Team member will receive a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) medallion and a $250 scholarship from KeyBank. The top six students, as ranked by PTK, will also receive scholarships from Washington State Employees Credit Union (WSECU) and the Washington State Association of College Trustees. Additionally, those students who choose to attend Washington State 4-year colleges and universities are eligible to receive additional scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.
About the All-Washington Academic Team and Phi Theta Kappa
The All-Washington Academic Team program honors our state’s finest higher education students. The 59 students who make up this year’s All-Washington Academic Team reflect the diversity of the state, exhibiting high standards of excellence and positive contributions to their communities. The team is comprised of students with goals to transfer to 4-year colleges and universities as well as those who will enter the workforce upon graduation.
To qualify for the All-Washington Academic Team, students must be part of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa has recognized and encouraged scholarships among two-year college students for more than 90 years by providing stimulation and enrichment while promoting academic integrity of the associate degree program. All-Washington Academic Team members will also be ranked at a national level, with a chance to be included in the All-USA Academic Team.
