For any business, good employees are as vital as a good product. At Budget Blinds of Lacey, the two go hand in hand in long-time employee Randy Utting. By working his way up, he’s built a career and the company’s stellar reputation for quality, sales and service.

Owner Amber Snaza recalls meeting Randy more than 10 years ago when he was working—unhappily—for her competition. After a brief phone interview, “he was hired on the spot!” Amber says.  Initially hired as a part-time installer and repairman, he moved to full time work in approximately 2010.

With such a strong team, business grew and Utting soon moved into sales and another installer was brought in. He’s now the primary salesman and point of contact for inquiries, in-home estimates, and more. Snaza estimates he’ll see 20 to 30 people each week.

Randy agrees. His earlier work “just wasn’t a good fit, but Amber’s a great lady,” he says, “you couldn’t ask for a better boss.” Sales work always felt overwhelming and a little scary, but he gladly filled in if needed. It quickly took the limelight for him as he became confident and found his passion.

“I wouldn’t have ever applied for just a sales position,” he adds. “But I liked it, which I didn’t think I would.” In the last few years, that’s been his focus, while beforehand it was a 50/50 split with repair and installation.

Growing and Changing with the Trends

“Last year was a record year for us,” says Randy. “It’s been great. Each year has gotten better and better lately.” Blinds, window treatments, shutters, and shades aren’t immune to modernization, and Budget Blinds ability to keep pace is part of the reason for their continued growth, especially when matched with stellar employees.

Some products are controllable with a remote control but the latest advancement is integrating with smart home systems. Blinds can be opened and closed through an app or by asking Siri or Alexa to do it for you. “Smart home stuff has just exploded in the last 2 to 3 years,” shares Randy.

There are even ways to pre-program your blinds to open and close with an electronic schedule. That way you wake up to the bright morning sun—part of the year, at least—and then your curtains close in the evening for privacy during family time.

Thankfully, the many Budget Blinds vendors are excellent at teaching the installation and sales teams about this new technology. They offer lots of literature, classes, and updates to integrate their product into whichever smart house platform you prefer. Just ask Randy or any of their sales team and they can walk you through adding it into the daily routine.

Outside of work, Randy is a Lacey local. He grew up there, after moving from Aberdeen when he was 5-years-old, and still lives in town with his wife and three children. They’re outdoorsy and love to camp or explore local beaches, lakes, rivers, and trails.

Within Budget Blinds of Lacey, Randy’s excited to see where things go next. “I’ve invested the last 12 plus years of my life with them and I’m excited to see where we go,” he says. “Amber has been the best boss I’ve ever had, I look forward to staying on.”

“When leaders throughout an organization take an active, genuine interest in the people they manage, when they invest real time to understand employees at a fundamental level, they create a climate for greater morale, loyalty, and, yes, growth,” says team-building author Patrick Lencioni.

The employer/employee bond between Amber and employees like Randy show just how important it is to success. And they have the reviews to show it. “Amber spent so much time with us and was so patient with me after I looked through book after book after book of beautiful fabrics and should have just went with her first pick as that was the perfect combination for my home,” says happy customer Kimberly Gosney. “She has exquisite taste and helped me with the style so much! Randy did such a wonderful job installing and I highly recommend! We wasted money trying to do it ourselves and I am so happy we went with Budget Blinds of Lacey!”
