It seems that everywhere you look in Thurston County people are walking, biking and enjoying all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates is working hard to keep our community healthy and active. When you are in pain you are less likely to get out and move your body, which affects not only your physical health, but your emotional well-being as well. Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates provides a full-service approach to your foot and ankle health by providing everything from physical therapy to surgical options. The professionals at Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates provide care for any ailment that affects your ability to move comfortably – from diabetic wound care and bunions to flat foot reconstruction. Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates is growing to meet the needs of our expanding community by welcoming a new provider into their group of professionals trained to keep us all on our feet, Dr. Michael Lundborg.

Lundborg is excited to join Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates bringing his expertise in foot health from years of top-notch training. While attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, Lundborg knew he was interested in a career in medicine, but had not decided upon the specialty until he took a bio-mechanics course. He became fascinated by how the health of the feet is so crucial to our overall well-being. “My mom is a nurse and she was able to connect me with some different types of physicians to shadow,” says Lundborg. “When I shadowed a local Podiatrist, I was amazed at the variety of patient problems they are trained to address.”

Lundborg attended the Temple University of Podiatry and did his residency in Boston at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. “My training at Beth Israel was affiliated with Harvard University,” explains Lundborg. “I was able to get amazing training as well as teach many Harvard students.” In Boston Lundborg was exposed to a lot of trauma and many different patient issues. Lundborg enjoys the variety that comes naturally with the discipline of podiatry.

Working in a trauma center, Lundborg has been involved in many very complicated surgeries. He brings this extensive experience in reconstruction to our local clinic. For example, Charcot foot is a side effect of uncontrolled diabetes. Significant nerve damage can cause the bones to weaken and ultimately fracture. Most podiatrists see only one or two of these a year. Lundborg corrected three to four per month in his work at Beth Israel. It was important to Dr. Terry Hess to add a provider that had not only vast experience, but someone who would fit into their very friendly and patient-oriented practice. Lundborg has experience in diabetic wound care, forefoot and bunion procedures, as well as trauma and reconstruction. He has a special interest in flatfoot and cavus reconstructive surgery, trauma, sports medicine, biomechanics, and diabetic foot ulcers.

Curious about why a Colorado native with an east coast education would land in Washington? “My final year of medical school I did a month-long externship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle,” Lundborg shares. The weather was perfect and he never forgot the beauty of the Northwest. It likely helped that his trip included a float plane trip highlighting the Puget Sound and lakes of the region.

Lundborg interviewed with several practices, but when he met Hess and his team he knew he had found his future home. “When I met with Dr. Hess and the staff I felt immediately connected,” he explains. “I believe in a patient-centered approach and treat my patients the same way I would treat someone in my own family.” At Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates the staff is family and Lundborg felt that comfort immediately.

Lundborg and his wife Elizabeth will be living in downtown Olympia with their dog Basil, a Yorkie puppy. “We are looking forward to getting to know Olympia and the surrounding areas,” he shares. They both love to hike and are excited to explore the abundant trails of our region.  He will really enjoy the short commute from his home in Olympia to the Tumwater office of Foot & Ankle Associates. “I am looking forward to a slower pace of life than I have found in the other places I’ve lived,” he adds.
