Saint Martin’s University will host an event for Constitution Day, September 17. The event is an Oxford-style debate regarding the question “Should the Second Amendment be repealed?”

September 17 is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. This day commemorates the September 17, 1787 signing of the United States Constitution. Each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students. Saint Martin’s University is hosting the debate as a public service. Saint Martin’s does not have a position or policy on the question of whether or not the Second Amendment should be repealed. Likewise, our debaters are volunteering their time for the public’s benefit. This is a debate between two scholars of the Constitution who have agreed to address the issue through formal advocacy and discussion. The essence of debate is exchange and the purpose of the event is to air the issues in a formal public setting.

WHO: The debate will be hosted by Robert Hauhart, Ph.D., J.D., Saint Martin’s professor of criminal justice, sociology and legal studies.

Shawn Newman, J.D., is an attorney and will argue in favor of the proposition. He has worked as an assistant attorney general, a college general counsel and as a public defender. He teaches a variety of courses at Saint Martin’s University, South Puget Sound Community College and Pierce College. He graduated from Ohio State University and the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Glen Morgan, who will argue against the proposition, is the executive director of the Citizens Alliance for Property Rights (CAPR) and the founder of WetheGoverned.com. He was recently one of the plaintiffs who successfully filed a ballot title challenge to initiative I-1639.  Morgan formerly served as the property rights director of the Freedom Foundation and was previously an intern for the Second Amendment Foundation. He graduated from Columbia College and is a fifth generation Washingtonian.

WHEN: Monday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

WHERE: Harned Hall, room 110, on the Saint Martin’s University Lacey campus, 5000 Abbey Way SE, Lacey, WA 98503
