Thurston County Tourism Award Winners Announced

The Thurston County Tourism Awards recognize people who have gone above and beyond to help bring tourism to Thurston County. Experience Olympia & Beyond, the region’s Visitor & Convention Bureau, gave three awards presented by Commissioner Bill McGregor at the recent Annual State of Tourism Meeting on May 22 at Great Wolf Lodge. The awards recognize tourism superheroes and highlight individuals who unite the community, work tirelessly towards achieving a long-term vision or show exceptional hospitality to better the experience for visitors and tourism in Thurston County.

Community Unity Award
For those who live out their belief in collaboration and regionalism, working to bring the communities of Thurston County together in the name of tourism.

Winner: Robby Rutledge, Rutledge Corn Maze

Robby Rutledge was nominated for bringing together a variety of farms, makers and natural attractions along the Thurston Bountiful Byway. In 2017, Rutledge’s corn maze design highlighted the Thurston Bountiful Byway logo shining a light on the 60-mile scenic, self-guided tour.

Tourism Visionary Award
This award honors an individual whose continuous commitment and trail-blazing accomplishments have set the stage for regional tourism.

Winner: Wayne Fournier, Mayor of Tenino
Mayor Wayne Fournier was nominated for his passion for putting Tenino on the map. He had visitor signage installed throughout town, provided hospitality to movie crews and worked with local media to intrigue visitors in the story of the Tenino Quarry Pool with a dive to the bottom.

Excellence in Hospitality Award
All who work in the hospitality business provide an invaluable service to the well-being of our economy. This award honors a hospitality professional who consistently goes out of their way to make visitors feel special.

Winner: Zoe Wells, La Petite Maison
A destination dining experience, La Petite Maison serves up French cuisine with warmth and hospitality. From open-hearted greetings to personalized service throughout any meal, Zoe sets customers at ease to enjoy a relaxed meal.

The awards were made from historic Legion Way Oak trees cut in the shape of Thurston County. The oak trees were planted in 1928 as a living memorial to honor local veterans.
