On Monday, February 19 and Tuesday, February 20, the City’s contractor, Betschart Electric, will be making improvements to the school crossings on Carlyon Avenue near Lybarger Street, and on North Street at the Olympia High School west driveway and near Pifer Road. This project replaces existing 20 MPH school speed limit signs with new solar powered school speed limit zone flashing beacons and 20 MPH school speed limit signs. The new flashing beacons should help get motorists’ attention more effectively, and improve the safety of school children that are crossing these roads.

This work will consist of excavating for the pedestrian beacon bases and then pouring the concrete foundations that the beacons assemblies will bolt onto.  Construction of the foundations was scheduled for these days to take advantage of the school district’s mid-winter break so it would be less disruptive to local traffic and school staff, students, and parents. If the contractor encounters unforeseen conditions or weather conditions do not allow completion of the foundations, this work will be rescheduled for the next possible working day. Residents in the area should expect some noise and limited traffic impacts typical of this type of construction.

Once this work is completed, the school speed limit flashing beacon assemblies will be installed approximately a week later.
