Thurston County and Bloodworks Northwest are teaming up for National Blood Donor Month on Tuesday, January 9 for a blood drive at Thurston County Courthouse Building 1. Bloodworks Northwest will have its mobile unit on-site with staff ready to accept blood donations.
What: National Blood Donor Month Blood Drive
When: Tuesday, January 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be a one hour closure for lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Thurston County Courthouse, 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW, Olympia WA, Building 1
The Thurston County Board of Health will also read a proclamation declaring January Blood Donor Month in Thurston County at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday January 9 at 3:30 p.m. The proclamation is to raise awareness about the need for blood donors and urge citizens to donate blood throughout the year, if and when they can.
“The derailment of the Amtrak train on December 18 impacted many lives in our region, and our thoughts are with the passengers and their families,” said Commission Chair, Bud Blake.
“We know this is one great way to show our support for those injured in that incident, as well as many others who are in need of blood throughout the year.”
January has been known as National Blood Donor Month since 1970. According to the Bloodworks Northwest 2016 Community Report, one in three people will need a blood transfusion during their lifetime, but only 10 percent of eligible blood donors donate blood.
The County regularly hosts blood drives at the Thurston County Courthouse throughout the year to help make it convenient for staff and citizens to donate.
