Olympia is likely to experience record-breaking heat this week, with temperatures reaching as high as 106 degrees. The Olympia Fire Department would like to remind you to stay hydrated and never leave pets or children in vehicles. If you need to escape the heat, please take advantage of one of the following options.

The Olympia Center

The Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation Department will open a temporary “Cooling Room” each day at The Olympia Center for members of the public to escape the heat and cool down. Drinking water and cups will also be made available during operating hours. In order to provide this service, the Artesian Commons Well Host and Park Ranger will be temporarily re-assigned to The Olympia Center to provide staff support. The Olympia Center is located at 222 Columbia St. NW. If you have questions about this service, please call 360-753-8380.

The Cooling Room will be open:

  • Wednesday (8/2) 1:00-8:00 p.m. – Room 103
  • Thursday (8/3) 1:00-8:00 p.m. – Room 102
  • Friday (8/4) 1:00-8:00 p.m. – Room 103
  • Saturday (8/5) 1:00-5:00 p.m. – Room 103

Heritage Park Fountain

In addition to its normal summer hours, the Heritage Park Fountain will be operating from 2:00-9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2. Typically, the fountain is closed all day for maintenance on Wednesdays; but due to extreme temperatures that afternoon, City staff will have the fountain open for use during the hottest part of the day. For the remainder of the week, the fountain will be open its usual summer hours, 9:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Heritage Fountain webpage or call Jonathon Turlove at 360-753-8068.

Timberland Library

The Olympia Timberland Library (313 8th Ave. SE) will be open to the public Monday-Saturday during their normal business hours. Please visit their website for more information.
