Thurston Community Media and KAOS 89.3 FM are proud to present award-winning journalist Amy Goodman for a speaking engagement at the Capitol Theater on Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m.  to 1 p.m. Goodman is the co-host of global newscast Democracy Now! and has written and co-authored six books including The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope. She is currently promoting the paperback version of her latest book Democracy Now!: Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America.

Goodman has spoken in Olympia before, but the timing of her return could not be more appropriate. In the past year, her coverage of the protest at Standing Rock from the front lines was harrowing. Moreover, heightened threats toward freedom of the press have increased the importance for independent media in presenting accurate coverage as well as providing a platform for communities to speak for themselves.

From Democracy Now!:

“[…]Democracy Now! has been reporting for two decades from the front lines of the movements that are changing America and changing the world.

No independent media outlet can thrive without the support and engagement of their communities. Goodman, a prolific, passionate professional, will discuss navigating the uncertain political and social climate of today and the important role that independent media plays in delivering news to and from communities across the nation.
