Whether it’s a holiday or reunion, traditions bring families together year after year. They bond us closer to our loved ones and help to create lasting memories. Lacey Spring Fun Fair has been one of those local traditions, bringing the community together for free family for 30 years. This year, the celebration takes place on May 6 and 7 at Saint Martin’s University.

“We’re celebrating our 30th birthday this year,” explains Lacey Parks & Recreation Supervisor Jeannette Sieler. “We plan to celebrate!” Just as any great birthday party would provide food and entertainment. BECU is sponsoring the 30th Birthday Bash to celebrate this milestone year with birthday cupcakes, clowns and a party where everyone is invited.

There is no shortage of entertainment for children of all ages at St. Martin’s University during the annual fair. “Our annual Talent Show has a new take this year. Twin Star Credit Union is sponsoring a lip sync contest on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. There is $150 on the line and it’s open to all ages so really, it’s anyone’s game!” Along with this epic battle, local acts will take the stage including local school bands and musicians, martial artists and an array of local dance troupes. For a full set list and times, see the fair’s daily schedule.

Along with live entertainment from some of the best acts in town, kids will go crazy for the rides. “We will have the giant slide, swings, pirate ship, inflatables and of course pony rides,” describes Sieler. “There is really something for everyone and the rides are all free.” Kids can also discover fire trucks and police cars from Lacey Fire and Police Department in the same area of the fair.

Every great fair needs mouth-watering food. The Lacey Spring Fun Fair has you covered. “We have 15 vendors this year offering a variety of food,” says Sieler. From egg rolls to elephant ears, even the pickiest eaters are covered with this array of merchants. “It’s really one of my favorite parts of the fair.” While the food isn’t free, it’s well worth the purchase.

With food in hand, head over to the local arts and crafts vendors. “We have quite a few local craft vendors this year,” explains Sieler. “There are a lot of shopping opportunities.” This includes jewelry, soap, engraving and more. It’s a great way to discover new items and shop local.

A must-see event has to be the annual Lacey Spring Fun Fair Car Show. Cars from all over the Northwest make their way to the fair to show off. Trophies are given to cars in a variety of categories including favorite car for each decade, favorite hot rod and favorite truck. Attendees even get the chance to choose the winner of a trophy themselves to the car deemed the fan favorite.

Knowing all the fair has to offer, it’s no surprise that it is a well attended event. “This year, we expect many families to come out and participate,” says Sieler. “We highly encourage families to take advantage of our free shuttle. We have three shuttles running back and forth at the Sears parking lot (South Sound Mall). It will run both Saturday and Sunday, every 15 minutes. It’s an easy way to get to and from the fair without having to find a parking spot.”

The Fun Fair isn’t just about having a good time. It’s all about making connections with those around us. “As you come into this event, you are going to see businesses, non-profits and volunteer groups all coming together to connect to the community. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors.”
