What does Thurston County taste like? The Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater Visitor and Convention Bureau (OLTVCB) wants to know.
The OLTVCB teamed up with the famous grannies at Ice Chips to make a candy that represents the flavor of the region. Ice Chips and the OLTVCB have narrowed down the candy choices to three flavors and now seek the public’s help in selecting the winning flavor.
Thurston County flavor choices include:
- Apple Fritters
Tasting notes: Inspired by the area’s famous farm fresh fritters, the candy is fused with the fresh taste of apples reminiscent of a trip down the Thurston Bountiful Byway.
- Artesian Rain
Tasting notes: As it has been said, “It’s the Water.” Rain keeps our natural beauty lush and green and artesian water feeds the area’s burgeoning craft culture. Mint is infused into the candy giving it a refreshing taste—just like the local scenery and culture.
- Coffee Rain
Tasting notes: Thurston County embraces the rain as much as the coffee that runs through local’s veins.

Ice Chips, a local candy company, makes candy with the healthy natural sweetener Xylitol. Xylitol reduces tooth decay and strengthens teeth. The grannies’ appearance on Shark Tank catapulted the candy’s popularity with rapid growth, including contracts with Disney.
“Ice Chips is a local treasure with national recognition. From their humble beginnings in a garage to stardom on Shark Tank, Ice Chips is the perfect partner to create a decidedly different flavor to represent Thurston County,” said Shauna Stewart, executive director of the OLTVCB.
The candy is part of the new destination brand launch and will be used as gifts to promote Thurston County to visitors, meeting planners, sporting event organizers and media. Visitors can taste all of Ice Chips candy flavor varieties in the company’s tasting room in Tumwater.
