Janet Schloz is still in shock after receiving a $2,500 Academic Award from California Casualty. “This is one of the best days I’ve had in a long time,” she said.

She thinks the coming week is going to be a very joyful for her classroom. “It’s a lot of money that I never thought I would have to help my students.”

The award will allow the 4th grade teacher at Tumwater Hill Elementary School in Tumwater, Washington, to purchase updated social studies books for her classes. She considers books an enduring gift that will help students for many years.

California Casualty created the award Academic Award after hearing about the economic drain on teachers who often provide educational essentials for students. National surveys find educators spend an average of $500 out-of-pocket each year, with many spending much more, for classroom supplies and materials.

“We have been proud to serve educators for more than 65 years,” said Sr. VP Mike McCormick. “The Academic Award helps cement our commitment to teachers and schools.”

Schloz, who has taught at Tumwater Hill Elementary for 24 years, believes in helping pupils persevere and turn mistakes into learning success. She said she is thankful for the support from California Casualty.

This was the 13th Academic Award given by the company since the program began in 2012.

The deadline to enter for the next $2,500 Academic Award from California Casualty is July 7, 2017, with a winner announced in August. Information and the easy entry form can be found at www.calcasacademicaward.com.
