Women United (formerly Women’s Leadership Council) of United Way of Thurston County is seeking proposals for funding of programs and projects from 501(c)(3) organizations that specifically address the needs of women and/or girls who are underserved or disengaged from typical community support and services. Proposals are due March 10. Finalists will be announced at Power of the Purse on April 28.

Women United is a diverse group of women leaders who are engaged in philanthropy, volunteerism, advocacy, and making lasting change. Nationally, these women make up the single most successful organization of its kind. Since its inception in 2002, the Women’s Leadership Council has raised more than $1 billion to drive real and lasting change. The contributions of these women leaders go well beyond financial donations: they get involved, shake things up and make a measurable difference in their own backyard and around the world.

Women United of United Way of Thurston County is dedicated to positively impacting the lives of women and girls in our community by promoting self-sufficiency and financial stability through philanthropy and community service. With over 100 members, Women United benefits the community by improving the financial stability of women and girls in Thurston County benefits both those individuals and our community. Women who understand how to support themselves and feel empowered to do so are able to give back to the community rather than relying on its services to survive.

In 2015-2016, $50,000 in grants and scholarships were provided to organizations promoting economic empowerment and financial self-sufficiency for women and girls. “We give life to our mission by funding programs right here in our community,” notes Women United vice-chair Martha Wagner Engle. “We hope through the grants they receive, these amazing organizations can continue their great work.”
