The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound recently awarded approximately $300,000 in grants to 56 Thurston County nonprofit organizations through its discretionary grants program.

The Foundation’s discretionary grants program is made possible by donors who have contributed unrestricted and broadly defined area-of-interest gifts. The Foundation also partnered with donors with donor advised funds to increase the amount of funds available.

The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound’s mission is to inspire philanthropic efforts that enrich our communities. “Unrestricted gifts to the Foundation allow us to respond to the community’s changing opportunities and challenges over time,” notes Norma Schuiteman, President & CEO.

A sampling of the organizations receiving Thurston County discretionary grants includes the Dispute Resolution Center of Thurston County, Olympia Free Clinic, Rochester Organization of Families (ROOF), SafePlace, Senior Services for South Sound, South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group, Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia, Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services, Washington First Robotics Olympia team, and the Yelm Cooperative.

“Donors trust us to be knowledgeable regarding our community’s current and evolving needs. They also know us to be good stewards of their contributed funds.” The Community Foundation currently holds 91 separate funds for individuals, nonprofit agencies and businesses pursuing their respective charitable goals.

“Dedicated volunteers from our Grants Committee reviewed the applications and recommended funding for 73 organizations,” continues Schuiteman. “The grantees represent the broad range of nonprofits that tackle tough challenges and strengthen what works in our communities.”

The Thurston County grants were among $408,550 the Community Foundation distributed at the end of 2016. Grants were made to nonprofit organizations in Lewis, Mason and Thurston counties.
