Saint Martin’s University is offering a matching scholarship for winners of the 2016-17 Washington Consortium for the Liberal Arts’ “Value of the Liberal Arts” Essay Contest for Washington high school seniors.

The consortium is an association of Washington public and private higher education institutions, organizations and individuals who promote the value and benefits of a liberal arts education. The contest, which is part of the consortium’s broader outreach program, asks that students choose a controversial issue in our society. Students then write an essay of 500 or fewer words on how a liberal arts education would help shape their understanding of the controversy.

The organization annually awards three scholarships to contest winners. The consortium gives the first-place winner a $3,000 scholarship; second-place receives $2,000; and third-place, $1,000. Should a scholarship winner choose to enroll at Saint Martin’s, his or her scholarship would be matched, says Sheila Steiner, the University’s director of assessment and accreditation.

“This scholarship is a great opportunity for our incoming first-year students,” Steiner said. “The Washington Consortium for the Liberal Arts embodies many of the same values as Saint Martin’s University, and this essay contest, in particular, encourages students to think about how they can be more engaged with their communities through liberal arts learning.”

The essay contest is open only to high school seniors in Washington. Winners must be admitted to and attend a consortium-member institution to receive the scholarship. The contest deadline is January 13. For complete information, go to www.stmartin.edu/wacla. Entries must be submitted at https://collab.evergreen.edu/hsessay/
