On October 21 at 6:00 p.m., the doors of the Capitol Theater will open on a new event for the Thurston County community. The Less is More Film Fest is a chance for the South Sound to learn more about less – less impact that is. Better yet, it’s free!

Turns out, America creates waste of all kinds at a nearly unprecedented rate. Plastics, textiles and even wasted food impacts our health, environment, and our communities in ways we often don’t recognize. According to ECO-360, Americans produce about ten and a half million tons of plastic waste a year, but recycle only 1-2% of it. Given that most plastic, regardless of when it was produced, still exists in the world today, you can probably guess there are a lot of unseen impacts.

Add to this, that the average American family throws out twenty-five percent of the food they buy, and that food, in turn, is responsible for producing more than 20 percent of the country’s methane emissions, and you begin to see how important this culture of consumption really is in terms protecting our planet.

Thurston County Public Works invites you to the free Less is More Film Fest, October 21, from 6:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at The Capitol Theater (Olympia Film Society) on 5th Ave. in Olympia. Doors open at six, and the festival will screen films that spotlight local and national efforts to reduce our impact on the environment, and bring attention to the many ways we can make a difference.

Join us for an evening of feature length and short films that will cover topics on everything from food waste to clothing recycling to living a “zero-waste” lifestyle. There will be free raffles throughout the evening (must be present to win), as well as opportunities to get involved in community efforts to reduce waste. If you’ve ever wanted to live a more sustainable life, or been intrigued by the eco-advocates who are working to lead the way, come check out the festival. More information, and a full program, is available on the Solid Waste website.
