Something historic is happening at Harlequin Productions.

Harlequin is preparing to stage the third musical of their 2017 season. The company has never produced three musicals in the same year. This special third musical is a commemoration of Harlequin’s 25th anniversary season.

“We wanted to do something special to celebrate our silver anniversary,” said Harlequin Managing Artistic Director Scot Whitney. “There are plenty of big musical fans out there, and we thought we’d give them a treat.”

Following The Stardust Christmas Dazzle and Little Shop of Horrors, the third musical of the season is the Last Five Years, running August 18-September 10.

This musical features just two actors and tells the story of the rise and fall of a five-year relationship between Jamie and Cathy, played by musical theater veterans Aaron Lamb and Katherine Strohmaier. The two take turns singing songs, telling the story from their point of view. However, Jamie begins his story at the beginning of the relationship and each song moves him forward in time, while Cathy begins at the end of the relationship and each song moves her backward in time. This unique storytelling technique adds great nuance to the story, all backed by a breathtaking musical score by multi Tony-award winning composer Jason Robert Brown. The result is a powerful story of love and loss and a poignant examination of modern-day relationships.

“It’s a profound story that is relatable for anyone who has felt their heart soar with love only to break with loss,” said the show’s Director Linda Whitney. “It celebrates the highest heights of love while acknowledging the lowest lows.”

Harlequin’s presentation of this musical will be especially unique. As Linda Whitney explains, “When one of the actors is singing their song, the other will be accompanying them on piano. So the two characters remain engaged through the music even when only one is singing.”

Musical fans can enjoy a bonus musical and celebrate Harlequin’s 25th anniversary by grabbing their tickets to The Last Five Years at harlequinproductions.org.
