The beloved musical Little Shop of Horrors is currently playing onstage at Harlequin Productions. Among the stars is Audrey II – a large, carnivorous plant with a taste for both human blood and funky soul singing. I sat down with the man-eating fly trap to discuss the show, which runs at Harlequin until July 24.
So, Audrey II, what’s it like to be a giant talking plant?
It’s a funky ride, baby! What I lack in the mobility department, I make up for in the soul department. Who needs feet when you got a funky beat? Hahahaha!
Are you enjoying working on this show?
I was born to perform, friend. I’m gonna lay it down right all summer long for these fine folks in Olympia. By the way, I’m definitely just here to sing in a musical and not to try and take over the world.
Uh-huh. Now, Audrey II, you are known to have an insatiable thirst for human blood. Has it been difficult to resist trying to eat anyone in the cast?
It’s forbidden in my contract.
I see. And how has it been working wi –
– though, now that you mention it, my contract didn’t say nothin’ about eating interviewers…
Alright well, you know what, that’s actually all the time we’ve got, Audrey II. Thank you for sitting down with me.
Short interview.
Yes, well, something’s come up and I actually need to run. Quickly. Right now.
Aw c’mon, friend, stay a while! Why don’t you come check out how sharp my teeth are?
Yeah, I’m just fine, thank you Audrey II. Break a leg in the show!
Oh you know I will baby! Hahahaha!
