High water in the roadway has resulted in lane restrictions on a section of a street in northeast Thurston County. In order to provide for the safety of the driving public, officials have closed one lane of Hawks Prairie Road NE between Carpenter Road and Eagle Drive NE, just east of Carpenter Road.

Currently there is 6-8″ of water along the south side of the road at the fog line. East bound traffic is driving into the west bound lane sometimes all the way over to the shoulder.

At this time it is prudent to restrict the traffic to one lane with the use of portable signals. This is based on the depth of water, volume of traffic, speed of drivers using the road and the current weather prediction of rain for the next 7 days. Over the weekend Public Works will evaluate the situation to determine if a road closure is necessary to protect the traveling public. In that event, a detour route will be implemented.

Public Works officials will continue to monitor the situation and will re-open the lane when it is determined that it is safe to do so. For more information please visit the County’s map on the public works website.
