Artisanal cheese makers from across the region will attend the first annual Livin’ on the Wedge Local Cheese Festival.

“Cheese is milk’s leap toward immortality,” claimed author Clifton Fadiman. Both foodies and midnight snackers alike can celebrate the joy of all things cheese at Bayview Thriftway’s upcoming first annual Livin’ on the Wedge Local Cheese Festival.

On Saturday, May 9 the downtown Thriftway location will host local cheese makers from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on a weekend full of exciting special events. Store Deli and Bakery Manager Shelly Brown laughs, “I am so excited about this event. I can hardly hold back on the cheese buying!”

With more than 20 local and regional vendors on site, Livin’ on the Wedge showcases crafters from around our area. Brown continues, “Our cheese customers are truly the best customers; they love local products and want to know the story behind these Artisan cheese makers and local bakeries. We want them to experience all the local flair and craft that these amazing artisans create. I just can’t think of a better way to let them see the amazing people behind the scenes that work long hours, day in and day out, for the love of their products. There will be great buys to be had from cheese to pastry, cupcakes and ice cream, produce, wine tasting, and more.”

Well-known cheese crafters like Tillamook will be on hand as well as small, regional specialty providers.

More than three years in the making, this curd-tastic celebration came about after Brown and other Northwest cheese buyers took a bus tour through Wisconsin to source new product. She remembers, “I thought to myself: these are really great cheeses, but why not Northwest products? Northwest products are some of the best in the country! Making the time to put together a promotion like this is always a factor but with dreams of creamy brie, fresh fetas, Goudas, and cheddars, and a love for Northwest cheeses so began the Bayview Thriftway First Annual Livin’ on the Wedge Local Festival.”

Attending vendors include: Black Sheep Creamery, Mt Townsend Creamery, 11 Olives Seattle, Willapa Hills Creamery, Tillamook, Ilas Foods, Domino Dairy, Rogue Creamery, Sisters Baking Company, Golden Glen Creamery, Beachers Seattle, Left Bank Pastry, Jacobs Creamery, Appel Farms, The Sweet Niche, FaceRock Creamery, Olympic Mountain Ice Cream, Cobb Chocolate, Christina Ciancetta, Cucina Fresca, Filipino Phils, Hemplers, and Oly Cultures.

Also at Bayview on Saturday is Bayview Catering’s outdoor BBQ from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. featuring Beechers Burgers with Hemplers All Natural Bacon and assorted local wine tastings from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. The weekend also includes a Produce Tent Sale from Friday, May 8 – Sunday, May 10 and hand crafted chocolate dipped strawberries in honor of Mother’s Day.

Samples of cheeses, sauces, wines, pastries, and much more will be available to visitors during the May 9 event.

The United States is ranked second in the world in cheese production. In 2013, we produced 10.6 billion pounds of the delicious, gooey perfection. With the rise in shopping local and green living, why not make time to come sample the best, freshest product around; you just might find a new family favorite. With sauces, wines, breads, and fruit pairings, it’ll be an afternoon to remember with no dishes to wash afterwards.

Bayview Thriftway is located at 516 West 4th Street. Call 360-352-4897 with any questions about any of their upcoming events or specials. You can even shop online here but you’ll miss out on all the sights, smells, and—best yet—samples.
