Congratulations to Home Instead Senior Care on their recent “Best of South Sound” award.

“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’” said Robin Williams. Thankfully our climate means we can often celebrate without echoing Mark Twain “in the spring, I have counted 136 kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.”

One reliable trove of reasons to celebrate is the annual Best of South Sound competition hosted by The Olympian. Weeks of voting for favorites in every category produce a comprehensive list of new goodies to sample, destinations to discover, and small businesses to support.

For local families with aging relatives, one 2014 ‘Best of…’ winner stands out. Mother/daughter team Bertha and Kelly Cavenah of Home Instead Senior Care embody the growing prevalence of Aging in Place by offering in-home support services. They opened their doors in 2007 to provide private duty home care so local seniors can remain independent in their own homes.

Kelly Cavenah is proud that the business has grown from two employees in a 600 square foot office to close to 50 employees with a quality administrative team in a 2000 square foot west-side location. When they were notified of being in the Best of South Sound Top 3, she admits to being “honestly and truly blown away; it was totally a surprise!”

Debbie Iverson is just one of the compassionate CAREGivers for Home Instead Senior Care.

But Cavenah assures me that “we consider every employee of our business a member of our family. It’s the staff that does the amazing work, they do it all from head to toenails.” Knowing that caregiving is a difficult profession, which takes total dedication, she can’t wait to celebrate the win with her hard-working CAREGivers and office team.

One such CAREGiver is Debbie Iverson. She explains that “there are four words that follow our company name that makes us stand way out from ordinary into extraordinary. Those words are ‘To Us, It’s Personal.’”

What exactly does that mean? “Our team builds around relationships with our clients and their families, the community and each other,” adds Iverson. “We give of ourselves, we care, we love, we hold a hand, we give hugs, we listen, we go the extra mile. It is a privilege to work for Home Instead Senior Care and it is an honor to work with our clients. They bring wisdom, joy, beautiful stories, smiles, laughter, courage, and they enrich our lives.”

A recent Kiplinger article highlighted the trend of Aging in Place: “Almost 90% of people over 65 want to live in their home and community as long as possible, according to a report by the AARP Public Policy Institute and the National Conference of State Legislatures. A whopping 80% believe they will stay in their home until they die. For some, friends and a familiar setting are the main draw, and for others, it’s an emotional attachment to the house.”

Even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development agrees “studies demonstrate the benefits of Aging in Place—benefits that extend beyond cost savings to include social and emotional benefits to both seniors and the broader community.”

While the Home Instead Senior Care team takes their jobs seriously, they don’t miss any opportunity for fun.

Home Instead Senior Care offers an array of basic, non-medical care options like meals, nutrition, transportation, household assistance. For those needing greater or longer-term help, they also provide respite and other services as well.

Kelly and her staff are eager to “provide practical support with a human touch.” Inquiries can be made either by calling 360-570-0049, contacting Home Instead online, or stopping by their offices at 1217 Cooper Point Road SW, Suite 8, in Olympia. Each employee is thoroughly screened, drug tested, credentialed, trained, bonded and insured. “We always consider what we want for our own loved ones and ensure that expectation is held to standard and up to par with each and every one of our clients,” notes Cavenah.

Visit the Home Instead Senior Care Facebook page too for up to the minute news, stories, and resources or attend one of their quarterly Family Caregiver Education Series talks. In March, the one-hour program is designed to educate the family caregiver on supporting their loved one with diabetes. There is no cost to attend but early registration is strongly encouraged since seating is limited. In April, they will be discussing Parkinson’s disease.
