Six Westport Wines Dominate World Wine Championships

Bordello Poster westport wineryAt the November World Wine Championships white wine competition in Chicago, Illinois, Westport Winery earned six high scores on their varietal whites and blends, resulting in four gold medals and two silver awards.

With another gold medal around its neck Bordello Blonde scored 91-points at this event. This wine is 75% Gewurztraminer and 25% Riesling from the famed Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA. The judges’ notes stated, “Interesting, fruity, yeasty aromas and flavors of piña colada, lemon Greek yogurt, stollen, and honeycomb with a lively, off-dry light-to-medium body and a sleek, delightful, medium-length finish displaying notes of honeyed apples and peaches and Meyer lemon tart with no oak. A delicious and vibrant fruit-forward white blend that is sure to please.” Bordello Blonde provides donations to the Aberdeen Museum of History.

Fleur de Lis, the winery’s 100% Pinot Gris from Airfield Estates Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA, also earned 91-points. The following comments from the evaluators describe this wine well, “Bright aromas and flavors of peach chutney and fruit salad with a silky, vibrant, fruity light-to-medium body and a smooth, interesting, medium-length finish with suggestions of spiced apples, Meyer lemon, and melon. A very tasty and balanced Pinot Gris.” This wine benefits the 7th Street Theater in Hoquiam.

The 2013 Captain Gray Gewurztraminer crafted with grapes from Red Willow Vineyard earned 90-points.” It was described as having “Bright aromas and flavors of white rose and peach sorbet with a supple, crisp, off-dry light-to-medium body and a sleek, appealing, medium-length finish that presents impressions of fruit salad, rose water, and honey. A bold, fruit jammed Gewurztraminer with pleasant sweetness and balance.” This wine benefits the Grays Harbor Symphony at the Bishop Center in Aberdeen.

Willapa White combining Pinot Gris from Airfield Estates and Riesling from Red Willow earned an impressive 90-points. This wine is said to feature “Lively aromas and flavors of pineapple cake and lemon meringue pie with a silky, tangy, fruity medium body and a smooth, interesting, carefree finish with impressions of kiwi and green apple. A tasty, tangy sipper or table companion.” A portion of the proceeds from this wine benefits WeFish a fishing family organization in Westport.

A balanced blend of Red Willow Riesling and Gewurztraminer called Lighthouse White earned 89-points. With the description of “Bold, complex aromas and flavors of baked exotic tropical fruits, toasted meringue, melon, and rubber sap with a silky, vibrant, off-dry medium body and a smooth, engaging finish imparting notes of honeyed pineapple and papaya-lime relish with fruit tannins and no oak. A lot of fun, fruity layers here.” The Westport Maritime Museum and Grays Harbor Lighthouse Restoration Project receive funds from this wine.

Westport 2012 Elk River Riesling received 87 points or the equivalent of a silver medal at this event.
The evaluator’s description includes “Attractive aromas and flavors of yellow apples, petrol, and nice earth with a satiny, lively, off-dry full body and a medium-long finish with fruit tannins and no oak.” The Twin Harbors Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation benefits from this wine.
