In front of a raucous full house at Olympia Indoor Soccer, Willie Spurr scored the first goal for the Oly Town Artesians in Western Indoor Soccer League play and notched his second goal of the game as the Artesians mounted a fourth quarter comeback but fell to the Tacoma Stars 8-5 on Saturday night. The game between the two closest teams in the WISL drew a mix of Artesians and Stars fans and made for a fantastic atmosphere in the return of indoor soccer to the Olympia area.

“Tacoma is one of the best teams in the league and we played really well against them,” said Oly Town head coach Nate Salveson. “We made a few mental mistakes early but we played hard and battled back and gave this fantastic crowd a great game in the end.”

Willie Spurr opened the scoring at the 9:02 mark of the first quarter to give the Oly Town a 1-0 lead. The Evergreen State College junior wrote his name in the Artesians’ record book as the first goal in league play for the club.

Just 45 seconds before the end of the first quarter, Derek Johnson scored the first of his two goals to draw the Stars even after 15 minutes of play. The Stars then went on a five goal run pushing their lead to 6-1 with goals from Vincent McCluskey, Kyle Danielson and Joey Gjertsen in the second quarter and one from Byron Conforti and another from Danielson in the early going of the third quarter.

Tom Kemennu stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 6:56 mark of the third quarter to get the Artesians to within four goals but Johnson notched his second goal just two minutes later to finish off the quarter with the Stars up 7-2.

Greg Wolfe gave the Artesians some hope early in the fourth quarter with a goal just 40 seconds in. The two teams played a scoreless next ten minutes before Steve Pirotte scored with 4:42 left to play to give Tacoma an 8-3 lead. Luke Chouinard answered right back a minute later and Spurr added his second goal of the game on a power play with just 2:06 left but the Artesians ran out of time and dropped their opener 8-5.

Oly fell to 0-1-0 in the WISL while Tacoma took sole possession of first place with their second win of the season. The Artesians return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they host the Wenatchee Fire on Saturday, December 6th at 6:00 PM.  More information and tickets are available at http://www.olytownfc.com.
