hometown logo“If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe” proclaimed Carl Sagan.  For those of us with day jobs, thankfully there are places around town that will do the work for you.  From scratch.  No universe required.

If local, timeless classic fruit and berry pies are your favorite and you still need to pick up a few additional veggies—or the turkey itself—try Lattin’s Country Cider Mill and Farm.  Located just outside of Olympia, they sell farm-raised birds, local vegetables, and amazing baked goods for your one-stop Thanksgiving shop.  This time of year pies and turkeys sell out fast so shop early and keep them frozen until the big day.  Lattin’s will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28 but open for farm tours on their regular schedule after that.  The popular farm can be reached at 360-491-7328.

A beautiful pie from Phoebe’s Pastry Cafe will grace your holiday table.

If over the top decadence is more your style, try Phoebe’s Pastry Café.  Phoebe creates such treats as a Pumpkin Chiffon pie nestled in a gingerbread pecan crust.  Because it’s dangerous to shop on an empty stomach, while visiting enjoy a Holiday Turkey Panini’s (complete with stuffing and cranberry sauce) to put you in the mood.  Their Thanksgiving pie options run from the traditional pumpkin, pecan, to chiffons and cheesecakes galore.  Pre-order due dates have passed but there will be lots of yummy options to pick up as well.  Call the shop at 360-742-3066 with any questions.

If you or your guests have dietary restrictions, the Bearded Lady Food Company is an amazing option.  They feature many vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options both in their cafe and bakery case delights.  Their shop hours are limited to weekend brunch and Friday and Saturday evenings so call first to confirm.  They’re at 360-943-6235 and special orders can be placed and picked up 7 days a week with advance notice.  Should you only need one or two servings to accommodate specialty diets, their amazing treats are also available around town.

Gluten-free and vegan options abound at The Bearded Lady Food Company.

For the hometown touch, visit the always inviting San Francisco Street Bakery.  Their pies are freshly made in an inviting, neighborhood location and always a treat.  Orders for Thanksgiving can be placed until Tuesday, November 25 in person or over the phone.  While there, save yourself the extra work and pick up delicious rolls, cheese sticks (a perennial favorite), and other mealtime baked goods.

Because there’s always that one last-minute thing you forget, be it pie, extra dinner rolls, or a latte to keep your energy up, Ralph’s and Bayview Thriftway have it all.  Bakery staffer Gina is proud that, “you name it we have it!”  This year’s pie offerings run from the traditional to the unexpected, in an array of fruits, berries, and cream flavors.  Pumpkin and pecan pies will be on sale throughout the holiday weekend and both stores are open until 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Thursday, with the deli section open until 2:30 p.m.

If you’ll be setting a separate kids table at your feast, pop in to Abby’s Cookies and Cupcakes during your pre-cooking haul.  They have pies, cookies, and sweets galore but specialize in that tiny bite of happiness: cupcakes.  An assortment of flavors and sizes beacons, in regular and gluten-free.  And who doesn’t love a cupcake?

Thanksgiving is overwhelming, whether you’re cooking or just eating.  So when it comes to making sure you’ll have enough time to properly give thanks with family and friends, picking up the fruits of someone else’s labor is a very good thing.  Especially when that fruit comes in a toasty warm crust with whipped cream on top.
