Downtown OlympiaThe City of Olympia is accepting proposals for the Downtown Safety Program which is part of the City Council’s initiative to create a safe and welcoming downtown for everyone.

The Olympia City Council has earmarked up to $25,000 of the City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money to pay for “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” (CPTED) projects in downtown Olympia. CPTED projects range from the installation of alcove gates and lighting to painting deteriorating buildings. CPTED principles are successfully used around the globe and have shown to reduce crime by up to 30% in certain neighborhoods. Any downtown property owner, non-profit or business owner can submit a project proposal. Submittal deadline is 5:00 p.m., December 1, 2014. Information and application forms can be found on the City’s website, olympiawa.gov.

While larger projects will be considered through the City’s CPTED program, smaller paint-related projects that can be completed quicker and cheaper may be referred to the Volunteers-In-Paint (VIP) program. The VIP program features volunteer labor and low-cost recycled paint –all of which brings costs down significantly.  These paint projects are funded by private property or business owners, and are conducted as part of existing Downtown Clean-Up Events hosted by the Olympia Downtown Association twice a year. Volunteer crews have included building owners, government volunteers, non-profit workers, homeless and other low income people – all working together to make Downtown Olympia clean and safe. Several recently completed volunteer-coordinated paint projects include:

  • Eagles Building, 4th Avenue and Plum Street  (Entire building)
  • Indian Creek Building, 705 4th Avenue  East (Entire building)
  • Griswold’s Building, 308 4th Avenue East (Building front and mural)
  • King Solomon’s Reef, 212 4th Avenue East (Partial – Eastside of building)
  • New Caldonia Building, 116 5th Avenue SE  (Partial – backside of building)

“We all have a stake in downtown,” says Brian Wilson, Olympia’s Downtown Liaison. “These programs are designed to get downtown building and business owners, employees, customers, and the greater community all involved in downtown revitalization and safety efforts.”
