At the heart of strong communities, libraries provide a jumping-off point for exploring the world.

One-hundred years ago this October, Olympia’s first permanent public library, now Olympia Timberland Library, opened in the Carnegie Building in downtown Olympia. Here are some highlights of the festivities planned for Saturday, October 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Dream Library Showcase: Putting a personal stamp on a community celebration

Artists and dreamers are invited to create the library of their dreams, in any format – painted, drawn, built, as a collage, or in 2D, 3D, photo or video. All artwork will be included in an exhibit at the public celebration on October 4.  Submissions should be dropped off at the Olympia Timberland Library by Friday, September 26 at 6 p.m.

On October 4, library lovers can stop by the popular “zine-table” to write or draw a fond library memory, or a reflection on why libraries are important. These personal statements will be captured in a commemorative zine (self-published magazine) that will become part of the next 100 year’s history.

Public Lecture at the Olympia Timberland Library

The Olympia Public Library opened in October 1914, a manifestation of a broadly held belief that libraries are a civic necessity. Branches, bookmobiles and programs sprang up quickly, serving people throughout Thurston County. The public is invited to learn more local library history on Thursday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m. with local author and historian Shanna Stevenson. Stevenson is the former coordinator of the Washington Women’s History Consortium. Program support comes from the Olympia Historical Society and the Bigelow House. Refreshments will be served. This program will occur after regular library hours; no other services will be available.

Celebration: Saturday, October 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On centennial Saturday, the Library’s doors will open wide to welcome everyone to the festivities.  For more details on “day-of” programming and events, call the library at (360) 352-0595.

All programs at Timberland Regional Libraries are free and open to the public.

The Olympia Timberland Library is located at 313 8th Ave SE. For information, contact the library at (360) 352-0595 or visit www.TRL.org.
