thurston county plastic bagTo help reduce the number of plastic bags wasting resources and clogging landfills, the plastic bag ban adopted by the cities of Thurston County goes into effect today, July 1. One local company is backing the ban with a giveaway of custom plastic bags.

South Sound Radiology (SSR) based in Olympia since 1973, is supporting the community by giving away reusable shopping bags to the facility’s staff and patients today.

“Simply giving away these reusable bags is an example of our commitment to the South Sound community by showing our support for this new ordinance,” said Tremont Parrino, MD, radiologist and co-president of SSR. “We’re happy to provide our staff and patients with a product that is environmentally responsible and reduces waste.”

The plastic bag ban is designed to help cut down on waste. While learning to bring your own bag when shopping will have to become a new habit, the Thurston County Public Works Department provided a few handy tips to help incorporate this into your shopping routine:

  1. Make “bring shopping bags” the first item on your grocery list.
  2. Keep a bag at the office, in your purse or in your briefcase.
  3. Hang the bags on your door knob or place them with your car keys.
  4. Keep your bags in the front seat of your car so you can see them.
