tumwater high schoolThe Tumwater High School Athletic Booster Club is preparing to induct four new members into their Hall of Fame at an induction ceremony to take place on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in the main gym at the school.  The fifth annual induction ceremony will be preceded by silent and live auctions as well as a banquet to raise funds for the school’s athletic programs.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for viewing auction items, dinner and live auction begin at 7:00 p.m. immediately followed by the Hall of Fame inductions.
The recently selected inductees include Jim Madison (Class of 1965), Deborah Matuizek, head volleyball and fastpitch coach (1974-2003), Scott Gurnsey (Class of 1990), and Kevin Clark (Class of 1992).
Jim Madison was one of the first students to attend Tumwater High School when it was newly opened in 1961.  By the time he was a senior he had lettered eleven times in basketball, football, and track and field.  He held the state record in the discus until it was broken in 1992 by fellow inductee, Kevin Clark!  After high school he went on to play football at the University of Washington before serving his country in Vietnam.
Coach Matuizek came to Tumwater to teach graphic arts in 1978 and never left the school!  She coached volleyball until 2003 and fastpitch from 1989-1996, and has influenced hundreds of girls who played for her during her tenure.  She took her volleyball and fastpitch teams to multiple state tournaments, and won a state championship in fastpitch in 1993 capping off an undefeated season.
Scott Gurnsey was “all around one of the best athletes to ever play football at Tumwater High School” states long-time T-Bird head coach Sid Otton.  Gurnsey was named to all-league status all three years that he played varsity, was named league MVP twice, was an all-state selection, and an honorable mention USA Today All American his senior year.  He went onto play football at the University of Montana and still lives in Missoula where he is a member of the Grizzly Football broadcast team.
Kevin Clark won five state titles in track & field and was a member of two state championship football teams during his career at Tumwater.  He still holds two school records in throwing events at the school and was arguably the best halfback to ever have played for the T-Birds.  After high school, Kevin played football at USC.  Just last year Kevin overcame his battle with cancer and continues to be a coach in the Thurston County Youth Football League for the T-Bird franchise.
The event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased in advance for $25 each or at the door for $30.  Admission includes a catered dinner by Pellegrino’s, the live and silent auctions, and the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.  To find out more visit the booster club’s website at www.soarauction.com, call the school at (360) 709-7601, or stop by the main office to reserve your spot.
