tumwater automotiveIt may not have won them a championship (yet), but defense helped the Black Hills High School girls basketball team survive Wednesday night.

Playing against Centralia in a 2A District IV tournament loser-out contest, the Wolves held the Tigers scoreless for the first four and half minutes of the fourth quarter, propelling Black Hills to a 69-47 victory at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.

The 22-point victory advances Black Hills into another loser-out match-up, this time against River Ridge for a birth in the regional round of the 2A State Tournament.

Stymied by Centralia’s physical play in the first quarter, the Lady Wolves were paced by star senior forward Sarah McGee in the second.  The Southern Utah commit used her jump shot and low post play to add six points in the quarter following only one in the first.  McGee totaled 12 points on the night, two coming on a put-back as time expired in the third quarter.

Despite foul trouble and exiting the game in the fourth quarter following a flagrant foul by Centralia’s Annmarie Nugent, Sydney Sauls poured in 10 points (2 3pm), while twin sister, Taylor, added 12 points of her own.  The perimeter shooting of Nicole Nurmi (two 3pm, 10 points) complimented the strong interior play of Shayla Smothers, who scored an efficient 8 points.  Kailey Fugere was terrific off the bench, scoring 9 points, seven of which came in the second half.

The Tigers were paced by senior post Michaela Hall (14 points) and 19 more from sophomore guard Madi Crews (#2).

Black Hills coach Tanya Greenfield was optimistic of her team’s depth early on in the season, and the balanced scoring from the Wolves was on display in their 40 point second half.

Though it was not her most efficient night scoring, McGee did a little bit of everything for the Wolves.  Her rebounding and low post defense set up a slew of break out opportunities for the Saul twins which in turn allowed Black Hills to set up their full court defense.

Tip off for Saturday’s game against River Ridge is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at W.F. West High School.
