TRPCWhat should we do to make the Thurston Region more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable in the coming decades? Where should we begin? And who should lead the way?

Sustainable Thurston – a public/private partnership of local jurisdictions, organizations, and community members – asked you and your neighbors these and other questions during the past few years and crafted a regional sustainability plan with goals  and actions to realize the bold vision for the future between now and 2035.

A draft of Creating Places – Preserving Spaces: A Sustainable Development Plan for the Thurston Region is now available for public comment. The draft document, as well as a companion Regional Housing Plan and Fair Housing Equity Assessment, can be found online  where there are several different ways to comment.

People who have joined the community conversation so far say the key to making the region more sustainable is creating places – such as city and town centers that offer  a wider range of housing and transportation choices – and preserving farms, forests and other rural and resources lands. Creating Places-Preserving Spaces recommends dozens more actions related to environmental quality, water, energy, food, health, economic development and other interconnected issues.

The Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) is slated to adopt the plan by the end of the year. In the meantime, TRPC policymakers and planners want to know what you think and how to continue the community conversation.

Success will require sustained and widespread commitment. At the household level, this means individuals integrating sustainability actions into their lives and influencing neighbors. At the government level, it means municipalities integrating sustainability into their comprehensive plans and other decision-making processes and coordinating regionally to bring about greater change.

Together, we can build a strong economy, healthy environment, and vibrant and resilient regional future. Let’s get to work.
