olympia bbq cateringThere are as many original stories and definitions of barbecue as there are restaurants that bear the name.  Wikepedia defines the word barbecue as originating from barbacoa, found in the language of the Taino people of the Caribbean in the late 17th century.  The word translates as “sacred fire pit.”  These pits were used to quickly cook the day’s catch while still on the beach, be it fish or manatee.  The Spanish explorers borrowed the word and introduced the pig into the Americas and to American Indians.

Today, the word barbecue commonly refers to a social gathering where food is served, and while you might not agree with the process, the food is always good.  In the southern United States, outdoor gatherings are not typically called “barbecues” unless barbecue itself is actually on the menu.

In the Olympia area, the largest barbeque gatherings this spring and summer have been charitable events for local non-profits.  Recently, the fifth annual Friends of Mia Alumni Soccer Cup, a fundraiser for cancer research, raised just over $8,000.  The foundation focuses on cancer research along with fundraising to offset medical and other expenses for families dealing with childhood cancer.

Coming up August 3rd at Olympia Port Plaza is Oly Brewfest, another local event benefitting the Thurston County Chamber Small Business Development (incubator) program.  Last year’s successful event was catered by several local food venues and this year will feature over 30 Northwest breweries.

Marv’s Marvlus Pit Bar-B-Q Catering has been actively involved in over half dozen fundraisers this year, from the startup business to Healing Hearts Ranch.  They are committed to providing community service and leveraging business to serve the community.

Regardless to how you define it, real barbecue celebrations include not only food, but beer, music and even better, people.  Not to mention the leftovers.

Marv’s Marvlus Pit Bar-B-Q Catering is a locally-owned family business.
